Learning at the Barn

The Barn is a wonderful setting to discover more about our heritage. In addition to adult and family activities listed on our events page, we also offer a range of schools workshops to suit KS1 and KS2.

Join us as we step back in time to explore how people lived in the past. Our current workshop offers are listed below, click on each heading below to find out more about what pupils will learn about, and curriculum links.

Barn Explorers – KS1

Pupils play detective as they test out what materials and techniques are needed to build a Barn like ours before dressing up and trying out various jobs that would be done around a medieval home.

Medieval Food – KS2

Get a flavour of medieval life as pupils try their hand at various recipes of the time before coming together for a ‘feast’ in the Barn. A real taste of days gone by!

The Apothecary – KS2

Discover the sometimes bizarre world of medieval medicine. We’ll take a look at superstitious doctors before testing out our own herbal remedies just like an apothecary of old.

We can accommodate 2 classes in one day with each class rotating between having a facilitated workshop, self-guided activities, medieval games and lunch break (bring a packed lunch). Timings run between 10am and 2pm. Our workshops cost £5 per pupil.

The terrain at the Barn site is uneven in places, although all locations for schools workshops are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss any access needs, or anything else about your visit, please get in touch at contact@winterbournebarn.org.uk.
